Naspamäť poznám jej repertoár chválospevov na svojho syna. Slušný, šikovný, pracovitý. Mám byť za čo vďačná! Gréta by takých, ktoré by sa k Marošovi lepšie hodili, našla namiesto dvanástich až pätnásť do tucta. Lenže som tu ja. Nevesta z vidieka, ktorá nikdy nedosiahne úroveň rodenej Bratislavčanky. Nikdy nebudem ako ona, hoci jediné, čo je na Gréte bratislavské, je pach smogu a síry, čo šíri okolo seba. Ani parfum Chanel ho neprerazí.
   S Marošom sme sa vzali pred rokom, len čo sme obaja skončili školu. Nemuseli sme, ale chceli. Nikdy sme nebývali spolu, teda ak nerátam dve krátke dovolenky v Chorvátsku a zopár nocí, ktoré tajne prespal u mňa na internáte. Hovorili sme o deťoch, poznali sme svoje dobré aj zlé stránky. Sny aj chyby. Patrili sme k sebe. Bol to Marošov nápad, aby sme sa nasťahovali k jeho rodičom. Mnoho vecí to vyriešilo a, popravde, iné riešenie sme ani nemali. Maroš sa odmietal zadlžiť, hypotéku na vlastné bývanie si nemienil vziať a prenajať si garsónku bolo tiež nad naše možnosti. Takto sme mohli jeden plat odložiť a šetriť si na vlastnú budúcnosť.

   Našťastie, Marošov otec – Maroš senior je úplne iný ako svokra. Poslušne vŕzga na druhé husle a vôbec mu to nevadí. Keď sa jeho Džidži, ako ženu volá, mračí, veselo si pohmkáva, a keď zbadá, že som ako bez duše, čo býva pomerne často, vľúdne sa mi prihovára, či si niečo nedám. „Kávu, čaj alebo pohár vínka?“
   „Stále sa na niečo vyhováraš,“ zasyčala Gréta.
   „Nevyhováram,“ ohradila som sa a v hrdle mi navierala hrča. Stával sa z toho nepríjemný reflex zakaždým, keď čosi v medziľudských vzťahoch zaškrípalo. „Kedy sa niečo také stalo?“ opýtala som sa, až mi hlas preskočil.

Iba raz som si dovolila narušiť tento stereotyp a maznavo som zašepkala Marošovi do ucha, či už nepôjdeme do našej izbičky. Svokra sa na mňa hneď oborila, uši má tenké ako netopier, vraj nemám Maroškovi kaziť pôžitok z filmu. Dotklo sa ma to. Mala som preňho lepší program.

   „Mama nikdy nepracovala a doma sa vždy o všetko postarala. Nemôžeš jej to mať za zlé,“ zastával sa jej. „Malo by ťa tešiť, že nemusíš variť ani prať. Mamka to myslí dobre.“ 
   „O tom pochybujem. Tvári sa, akoby sa práve napila octu.“
   „Karinka, veď ťa nekritizuje, iba ti chce pomôcť.“
   Odula som pery: „Nekritizuje, to je fakt, ale vidím na nej, že ju svrbí jazyk.“ 
   Zasmial sa: „Zveličuješ, Karinka.“

Keby som otehotnela, potrebovali by sme ďalšiu izbu pre bábätko a Maroš by zaiste zmenil názor. Dieťa by ho primälo, aby sme sa postavili na vlastné nohy.     
   V ten večer sme prvý raz zaspávali obrátení chrbtom k sebe. Maroš sa ma nedotkol, akoby ma chcel za niečo potrestať alebo iba vyhovieť milostivej mamičke. Až ráno na všetko zabudol. Aj na moje úpenlivé prosíkanie. Alebo sa len tak tváril. Chrobák...

Obávam sa, že Maroš ma nepochopí, pretože svokra na mňa útočí len vtedy, keď jej syn nie je doma, alebo nás nemôže počuť či vidieť. Takže Maroš o ničom netuší, hoci som sa mu to snažila už párkrát naznačiť. No moje slová sa minuli účinkom, nezastal si ma, nepodporil ma, tak ako som očakávala, pretože bol presvedčený, že preháňam. 
   A tak sa uzatváram do seba, krivdy zatláčam kamsi do úzadia. Zbieram ich, tisnem na seba a zapĺňam si nimi dušu. Ťažia ma. Hrozne ma ťažia, pretože najhoršie je, že náš vzťah s Marošom trpí.
